Blue moon

I was up early enough this morning to see the blue moon, and it was yellow. I want my money back.

For those who don't know, the reason that's funny is that blue moons are rarely blue. I wish I could educate you further, but I don't know the etymology of the term... anyone want to help me out here?

I can't help you out, but I certainly have come to believe that a full, blue moon makes the kids at TCH act-a-fool!! Make it stop!!

Aunt Lisa here, to tell you what our local weather man said about the blue moon. He did not mention the color! All he said was that the blue moon occurs when there are two full moons in the month, and the second one is called the blue moon. Because of the rarity of that occurrence, that is where the expression 'once in a blue moon' comes from to describe infrequent happenings. I didn't know that, so thought it might be an extraneous tidbit to store away in case any of us get selected to be on Jeopardy and dethrone Ken Jennings.

Thanks Lisa! I did know that; I learned it from the weather people on CNN the night before it happened, but thanks for posting it since I hadn't put up the info. I'm wondering specifically why it's called "blue"... I remember an episode of The Smurfs once in which they had to do something on the blue moon, but that's the only association I have with it besides the popular phrase. Free association by Erica.
