Infant Development Update
Mostly so I'll remember, but also for those of you who care...
In closing, here's Kent with a very blurry Mr. Kat. He loves that kat. This photo actually has three handmade gifts in it: the pillow, which Joanna made for us a bunch of years ago; the blue blanket, which Nikki (and her mom) crocheted for Kent for Christmas; and Mr. Kat, from Aunt Anilia. Loving the handmade presents right now.
- Kent has this wooden puzzle that has a few basic shapes with big knobs on them, and for the first month or so that we had it, he just liked to pull the pieces out and carry them around the living room. A week or so ago, though, he started putting the orange circle back where it belongs. Just the circle, but it's a step. He'll pick up the other pieces and sort of try to put them in the spot where the circle lives, but he hasn't tried too hard to find where they actually do go. It's still neat to watch how he prefers the orange circle and keeps putting it where it belongs.
- Kent's eating all kinds of new foods, including little pieces of almost everything we eat, unless it's really spicy or salty or unhealthy. It's going well. The only times we have trouble are when he's in a tired/frustrated mood and starts dropping his nibbles very deliberately on the floor, but he usually doesn't do that if we remind him how to eat every so often (i.e., modeling the behavior ourselves).
- I've tried today to help him eat better with a spoon, and he's much more patient than the last time I tried teaching him this. We've been feeding him ourselves, since it's much faster and less messy, but he's appeared more interested in the spoon, and he seems ready to learn. I still hold the end of the spoon while he grabs it, since it often gets misdirected up in the air or onto the floor, but he gets that it's mostly for eating, not for playing. What a change from a few weeks ago.
- He likes washing his hands after meals, because we sit him on the edge of the sink, rub his hands back and forth under the water while we sing silly songs, and let him splash his feet in the water while we wipe off his face. It's one of my favorite rituals, actually.
- He's doing a great job at walking with only one hand to assist him. He still gets tired of it after going halfway down the hall, for example, but he has a lot more confidence in his own balance than he used to.
- He's also standing for a few seconds at a time now. It's completely by accident. So far, it's only happened when he's been holding two toys at once and has leaned back from whatever he was propping himself up on. I've tried to explain that the main benefit of learning to walk will be that he can carry two toys at once, but it hasn't proven enough of a motivator thus far. He's also getting really close to standing on his own; he'll sort of raise himself into a squat but can't quite get all the way up without falling back onto his butt. This is what diapers are for, I'm convinced. The padding.
- Just in the last day or so, Kent has started handing me things that he wants to play with. A few blocks, a ball, a puzzle piece... and today has been The Day of The Book. We have several library books in the living room, and I've read them to him about 5 times each today, because he keeps handing them to me. Even now, Jack is reading Slobcat to him for about the tenth time tonight. We're also really into Ollie right now. Oh, and by the way, I just had to take a break to read him Slobcat. Again. It's a very good book, albeit out of print now, and I think Kent likes it the best because it has really great illustrations of this cat who has a bunch of grand adventures in secret but whose family thinks he's just lazy all the time (hence his nickname). He's going to be a fan of this sort of repeated reading for a long time, isn't he?
- Jack just noticed that Kent doesn't seem nearly as interested in pulling our CDs off the shelves anymore. Awesome.
- Hey, guess who's reading Slobcat again?

I can't believe you still have that pillow! It seems like ages ago, wow. Nice goofy face from the kid. :)
